Full Description

This huge tower mill was in existence by 1798, being depicted in an engraving of that date as having a broad reefing stage, squat ogee cap with fantail and four common sails. It was probably not very old at this time and it was subsequently rebuilt or modernised c.1810, when it was also raised slightly. It worked until 1895 when the miller became bankrupt and the mill was subsequently dismantled. There were three pairs of stones and it formerly had large buildings attached to its base. The tower stands to its full height of approaching 70 feet, with eight storeys and is at present disused, although there are plans to preserve it, probably involving some kind of conversion. All that remained of the machinery was a power drive from below to the spur wheel, but this was removed in 1985 during preliminary conversion work. {1} Early-mid 19th century. Tower mill without cap or sails, in red brick with diagonal red brick eaves cornice to top.
