Full Description

44621 [Includes information from PRN 40578, now deleted.] The medieval settlement of Girsby is documented in the Domesday Book and the Lindsey Survey of 1115. {1} Settlement remains are recorded as surviving as earthworks in the area of Girsby Grange. These remains include tofts, a trackway and ridge and furrow. {2} Girsby, a lost hamlet of Burgh on Bain, does not seem to have had a church. Nothing seen on aerial photographs of the area of Girsby Manor but earthworks at TF 22168646 (PRN - 40573) may be connected with this site. A likely site of this hamlet in the area of the manor has been investigated, but no surface indications of desertion were noted. The house of Girsby Manor is recent and half demolished. {3}{4}{5} A large block of ridge and furrow in the northwest part of the area (previously recorded as an earthwork) has been destroyed by arable cultivation. {6}
