Full Description

The remains of an Iron Age ditch was recorded in 1991, during trial trenching conducted to inform the proposed widening of the A46 road between Lincoln and Newark. The ditch ran to the south-east and along the same alignment as an earthwork bank, which marked the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire county boundary in this area. Ten sherds of Iron Age pottery were recovered from the fill of the ditch, including three substantial pieces. Further redeposited sherds of Iron Age pottery were recovered from the adjacent earthwork bank. It was suggested that the possible bank and ditch system perhaps represents a sequence of construction of territorial boundaries dating from the Iron Age to the Anglo-Saxon or medieval period, although this interpretation remains tentative. The trenching also identified the shallow-scooped remains of a probable former pit on the north-western side of the bank, from which sherds from an almost complete late Iron Age pot were recovered. All of the lower half of the pot was present, together with about half the upper part, with a single small hole bored through the base of the pot. It was thought likely that the complete vessel had been deliberately buried in this feature, before later ploughing broke it up. {1} The remains of a second Iron Age ditch was recorded in 2001, during further trial trenching conducted to inform the proposed widening of the A46 road between Lincoln and Newark. This second ditch lay approximately 100m to the north-east of the previously identified ditch, and along the same alignment, suggesting it may actually be a continuation of that feature. Eleven joining pottery sherds from the base and walls of a late Iron Age shell-tempered vessel were recovered from the primary fills of the ditch. It was thought likely that the vessel had been deliberately placed upright in the ditch, with its subsequent breakage thought to have been caused by later ploughing. {2}
