Full Description

Early 18th century farmhouse, with minor 19th century alterations. Built of coursed rubble and brick, with ashlar dressings. Features a plain tile roof with 2 brick gable stacks and ashlar coped gables with kneelers. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The current Manor House is believed to have been built in the early 18th century, using building materials salvaged from the original manor house that was sited within the medieval moated area to the south (see MLI60284). These materials include a date stone of 1625, located high up on its northern gable. {2}{3} Whilst not included in the detailed programme of historic building recording of the former outbuilding to the east (see MLI125640), the Manor House was briefly described in May 2008. The date stone is inscribed 'W D, AD 1625', with W D assumed to refer to William Disney, who was lord of the manor at this time. The date stone is recessed somewhat into the northern gable, and appears more worn than the surrounding masonry. Documentary research attests that a manor house structure was indeed built in 1625, although the current structure is early 18th century in appearance. It was therefore thought likely that the original medieval manor house, located within the moated site (see MLI60284), was replaced in 1625 with a new house, either on this site or still within the moated area. This 1625 structure was then replaced in the early 18th century with the current Manor House, utilising material from the earlier buildings in its construction. {4}{5}
