Full Description

Former school and schoolmaster's house. One and two storey T-plan red brick building in Flemish Bond, under a pitched gabled slate roof. Decorative bargeboards and finials on the gables. The two storey range may have originally been a residence for the teacher. It has a large central ridge stack, and a datestone on the north gable reading 'A.D. 1869'. The single storey range has a single smaller ridge stack, and the roof has fleur-de-lis crested ridge tiles. {1} No school building is mentioned in either White's 1856 or 1872 Trade Directories but a National Schoolmistress, a Miss May Ann Clay, is mentioned in the 1872 edition. {2}{3} The school is shown on both the 1887 and 1905 OS maps of Stapleford. {4}{5} It is unclear when the school was closed and converted into a house.
