Full Description

PRN 70316 During a watching brief on geotechnical pits in 2002, medieval pottery was recovered from what were thought to be the fills of features, probably pits. {1}{2} Trial trenching at Anchor Street revealed evidence of widespread dumping across the entire site, possibly to reclaim land along the edge of the River Witham. Some evidence of medieval occupation was recorded in the form of the corner of a late medieval stone dwelling and a possible internal stone floor. Post holes and refuse pits have also been recorded. From the assemblage of pottery recovered from the site, five vessels have been identified as wasters, dating to the 13th or fourteenth century which supports the theory that the area has a history for continued pottery production. {3}{4} A watching brief was undertaken during geotechnical investigations on land at Anchor Street, Lincoln. The watching brief recovered pottery dating to between the 11th and early 16th century, and roof tile dating to between the mid 12th to 16th century. The watching brief corroborated the findings made during earlier archaeological and geotechnical investigations, with proof of Medieval deposits being found throughout the area. {5} {6}
