Full Description

PRN 62633 William Nightscales is recorded as being a clay pipe maker and having a shop in Eastgate in 1856 in White's Directory.{1} A watching brief carried out at circa TF0695 4578 in 2002 found numerous clay pipe stems and a bowl with the maker's mark of William Nightscales (see PRN 65284). The bowl has well-moulded foliage in prominent relief on the mould seams and two poorly-defined human figures with shepherds' crooks on the bowl faces. A partial maker's mark appears around the bowl rim, showing the letters 'SCALE'. The fact that the bowl and several of the stems were distorted suggests that they may be kiln waste. Pigot records William Nightscales as being in 'Carr's Lane' in 1841, Carr's Lane almost certainly being Carre Street, where the pipe stems were recovered. It is therefore suggested that the clay pipe kiln of William Nightscales may be located in this area.{2}
