A large amount of iron working slag was recovered from a pit during a watching brief to the rear of Sycamore House. The slag was identifiable to specific processes and indicated that iron smelting and smithing had been undertaken nearby (see 36117). The excavations at 8 Church Lane revealed similar remains, and suggests that there may have been a zone of industrial activity (see 36111). {1}{2}
