Full Description
62620
A Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is mentioned in White's Directory of 1856. It is indicated on the OS 1905 Second edition County Series map, and the 1956 1:10560, but appears to no longer survive. {1}{2}{3}
The site was visited in 2009. The chapel now standing on the site was built after 1900. The eroded date tablet is only partially decipherable but is inscribed 'Wesleyan Chapel 19--'. It is now in use as the Village Hall. This chapel appears to be the successor to the earlier chapel built in 1835 which had a Sunday School. The extant chapel is built of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a gabled roof with a slate covering. The gabled front elevation has 3 stepped, tall, narrow windows with segmental heads. The gable verges are emphasised with stepped red brick courses. A flat-roofed porch below has a parapet with raised angles and stone copings, ashlar dressings and the eroded ashlar date stone. The porch includes a flat-headed side doorway and 3 small rectangular windows with ashlar heads. A gabled annexe, attached at right-angles to the west, has a large round-headed west window. It probably represents a former schoolroom. A later gabled annexe constructed parallel to the chapel is linked to the chapel by a porch with a doorway.The side elevations have 3 bays of paired, segmental-headed, windows with red brick and ashlar dressings.{4}{5}
