Full Description

The settlement of Sutton was probably included in the assessment of Holme Spinney in the Domesday Book with Beckingham and other hamlets. The assessment included 24 carucates of land and a minimum population of 59. The name 'Sutton' means 'the farmstead, village to the south (of Beckingham)'. It is first mentioned separately in the Book of Fees (c.1145). {1}{2} There were ten households recorded in Sutton in 1563. {3} Earthworks of medieval settlement activity and associated ridge and furrow are clearly visible around Sutton on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer. The earthworks include the reamins of strip field boundaries in north-eastern field and possible settlement earthworks currently surviving ploughing in the north-western fields. {4}
