Full Description

33384 "A place called Barrowby Abbey about 200 yards north of the church and which has been moated round is now a farmhouse." (from W.Marratt, 1816). The site is now known as the Grange. Broomsby is probably a corruption of the name of the house concerned eg perhaps Ormesby? This site remains to be investigated. {1} In 1865, in a lecture given in Thurlby, Willam Groome stated: 'Within 200 or 300 yards of the Church was an Abbey called Broomsby Abbey. This building (which was formerly moated round) is now used as a farmhouse ... and is known as the Manor House.' {3} This reference, source 3, is probably referring to The Manor House (PRN 36065) about 170m to the north of the Church rather than the Grange that is further north and some 450m from the Church. Groome obviously took this information from Willam Marratt's History of Lincolnshire. William Marratt is unreliable as an historical source and did tend to make assumptions about abbeys and priories that are unwarranted. There is no medieval documentary evidence for a medieval religious house in Thurlby parish and there is no reliable evidence for an abbey at Thurlby by Bourne. {4}
