Full Description

PRN 35804 A multiple ditch system identifiable as crop marks on aerial photographs was excavated. It consists of three parallel ditches running east-north-east adjacent to King Street proceeding for at least 320m at which point the ditches becomes less clear. The multiple ditch system post dated the co-axial field system see PRN 35803 but Iron Age occupation prior to this is evident in the form of over 600 pottery sherds of an early Iron Age date being recovered from the site. The triple ditch system then appears to be overlain with a series of boundaries, but it is not impossible that the triple ditch system and co-axial field system were still influencing the landscape. Geophysical survey confirmed the presence of a curvilinear enclosure already identified on aerial photographs. This enclosure, one of eight on the Rectory Farm site, dates to the early to middle Iron Age. The earliest structural evidence was of two circular buildings located in Mill Field TF 1226 0998. A good assemblage of middle Iron Age pottery was recovered from this area and several hearths and a pit were also associated with this period. A large single ditched enclosure was also recorded in this area, and although slightly later in date it is possible that it could still be associated with the two circular buildings. The evidence for settlement on the Mill Field site and Rectory Farm site TF 1163 1013 is much stronger in the late Iron Age than in the preceding periods. The Mill Field site consists mainly of the remains of circular dwellings. A total of thirteen structures were interpreted as belonging to this period, including post-built structures, this is suggestive of quite extensive settlement during in this period. [This is a temporary record and needs further revision] {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A watching brief at 35804a was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology between September and December 2002 on Phase 1A of works at Rectory Farm, West Deeping. A sherd of c. 3rd century BC pottery and a number of cattle bones from the same context were found. {9}{10} The watching brief in 2002 by Pre-Construct Archaeology at 35804b revealed that an earlier Iron Age field system appears to have been replaced by a middle Iron Age square enclosure which may have served as a stock enclosure. Two pits with the ditch butt ends of the enclosure show that the feature was abandoned in the late Iron Age. {11}{12}
