Old Church Cottage is a sixteenth century timber-framed building with plaster infill on a brick plinth, and a thatched roof. It also has coursed rubble gable ends and two brick gable stacks. It has one and a half storeys. In 2012, monitoring and recording of test pits around Old Church Cottage revealed a sequence of former topsoils which were formed after the construction of the cottage. The date of these topsoils was, in fact, later than the supposed date of the cottage. In addition, limestone blocks used in the foundation of the original cottage were evident in two of the pits, and were embedded into a former topsoil of seventeenth- to eighteenth-century date. This suggests that the sixteenth-century date for the construction of the cottage is perhaps an error. Alternatively, it may indicate that the cottage had been rebuilt at its present location, in the eighteenth century, re-using the same material and in its original style. Any future building recording of the cottage might help to clarify its development. {2}{3}
