Full Description

PRN 70306 This is the site of an inn which was constructed in circa 1660 and named 'The Chirurgeon's' after Dr Walker, the surgeon who had previously lived in a house on this site which the inn had replaced. The inn was later renamed 'The Hare and Hounds' and still later renamed 'The Fighting Cocks' because it contained a cock pit. The site was owned by the Banks family circa 1716, whose most famous member was Sir Joseph Banks, the distinguished botanist. Prior to its demolition circa 1777 to make way for the city's first hospital, it was owned by the Forster family, who built 'The Angel Inn' which used to stand on the corner of Bailgate and Eastgate.{1} During renovation work in 1998, reused timbers were discovered incorporated as joists in the northern part of the floor of a ground floor room of the Lincoln Theological College/Chad Varah House. The timbers were subject to detailed recording and dendrochronological analysis. The dendrochronological analysis gave felling dates of 1648 to 1657 which are consistent with the possible construction date of the inn, and the timbers are thought to have been originally used as roofing timbers.{1}{2} See also PRN 70307.
