Full Description

PRN 62572 A manorial chapel dedicated to St Nicholas was located in Haddington. It was recorded in 1234 when a parson was named (Lincoln Record Society Vol 17 p.277). The nuns of Fosse provided a daily mass there (recorded in the Hundred Rolls, p.285). It was licensed for service in 1398, and was recorded as a free chapel in the Valor Ecclesiasticus. {1} The site was said to have been visible in the mid nineteenth century. {2} The estate map of 1850s is said to show an area called 'Chappel Yeard', half an acre of ground to the south of and adjoining Dovecote Lane. {3} In the north eastern corner of the Scheduled Ancient Monument at Hall Close, Haddington (and included in the scheduled area), is the site of the chapel of St. Nicholas, first referred to in 1233 as dependant on the church of St. Michael at South Hykeham. In the late 13th century it was given to the nunnery of St. Nicholas at Torksey. It is last known to have been used in 1775, and had been demolished by 1850 when an estate map marked the extent of the former churchyard, a rectangular area about 30m wide and 40m long. At the northern end of the churchyard is a raised platform measuring about measuring about 10m by 30m and aligned east to west; this is thought to represent the location of the buried remains of the chapel {4}.
