Full Description

PRN 13633 Excavations revealed prior to Haven House there was another building on the site. Two walls of at least 4.8m wide and 9.4m long were revealed together with an internal hearth at the northern end. A brick floor and some internal stub walls were also recorded. The building may possibly have been the Old Custom House that is known to have been in this area in the 15th or 16th century. Foundations not contemporary with these initial hand-made brick construction walls were also found. The foundations were constructed from limestone, some of which was worked and probably originated from more substantial high status buildings. These foundations are thought to be perhaps an extension to the Custom House. The entire building was probably demolished during the second half of the seventeenth century. This further supports the theory that this was the Old Custom House, which went out of use between 1640 and 1662. {1}{2}
