Full Description

PRN 70298 During trial trenching in 1998, a partially robbed north/south aligned wall was recorded, thought to be part of a building erected in the early to mid-thirteenth century. No associated occupation deposits were found to the north of the wall, suggesting that any floors or associated occupation debris were to the south of the wall, outside the evaluation trench. The possible building is thought to have been demolished in the fifteenth century, from pottery finds sealing a robber trench which had removed the upper parts of the wall. Twelfth to thirteenth century pottery associated with the wall was mainly of good quality and a type of tile found on this site had previously only been found on ecclesiastical or high-status sites. The pottery evidence, together with finds of iron blade fragments and stone hones, therefore suggests high-status ownership.{1}{2} During a watching brief in 1998, four sherds of medieval pottery were recovered.{3}{4}
