Full Description

PRN 70292 During a watching brief in 1997 and 1998, two undated limestone features were recorded, thought to relate to elements of the former Newland Gasworks, shown on maps dated 1842 and 1888. Comparison of the positions of the features with these maps suggests that the smaller feature may be part of the boundary wall, while the larger feature may be part of the foundation of one of the large gas holders originally located in the north-eastern corner of the gasworks site.{1}{2} The gas works was established at Newland in 1828 by Lincoln Gas Light and Coke Co. and opened in 1829. In 1885 the company was transferred to the local authority and were under the control of the Corporation Gas Committee. Manufacture ceased at the plant in 1873 and the building was subsequently used as offices. By 1919, other works were opened in Carholme Road. {3}
