Full Description
62547
The County Forge is a house, shoeing bay and forge built in the early nineteenth century. It is built of colourwashed red brick, and has slate roofs. In plan it has two circular units which are linked by a hipped rectangular block. It was built by Earl-Bishop mostly to a design by John Nash. It is important as an example of 'Picturesque' architecture, and because of its rarity. The Round House (62545) is related as part of John Nash's design. There have, however, been many changes to the building. {1}{2}{3}
The smithy is a circular cylinder 20 feet in diameter, which was reduced in size in the 1950s. The smithy house at the other end is the same size. Inside the bisecting wall is all that survives of the internal layout. Between the two round structures was a rectangular building of which only slight traces remain, excepting its roof. A brick wall linking the two cylinders supports the centre spans of the framing of the hipped roof. On its north side was an open shoeing shed and workshop, later partially boarded on its west side. This side of the roof was supported on four wooden uprights. On the south side little remains except a stub of walling laid in the same bond as other visible fragments in the building, and which may be contemporary with the house and smithy. {2}
