Full Description
Deposits of late Saxon date, including part of a 10th century pottery kiln, were uncovered during trial excavation in early 1997. {1}
During a watching brief at Sessions House, late Anglo-Saxon ashy deposits mirroring those found during the evaluation were recorded. Cut into these were the remnants of wall foundations (aligned east/west and north/south) and a robber trench (aligned north/south) representing three walls of a structure. Features thought to be internal to the structure were laminated bands of ashy soil, a posthole and a pit-feature containing early 11th century to early 13th century pottery. The structure may possibly be a workshop associated with the kiln recorded during the evaluation. A clay floor was recorded cutting into a deposit dated to the 12th century, and three rubbish pits containing animal bone and pottery were thought to represent the rear yards of properties fronting onto medieval Pottergate. {2}{3}
