Full Description

In 1984 an almost complete stamped mortarium, found near the Car Dyke, was brought into the Sleaford offices of TLA. It was 31cm in diameter, and made of a fine cream fabric with angular red grits, probably grog made from once-fird clay. The base is missing. The stamp indicated that the potter was Similis. Examples of his die have been found in many parts of the country. He appears to have worked in Mancetter in Warwickshire, in the Nene Valley, and in the north west. This mortarium probably dates to the mid second century. {1}
