Full Description
A clay floor layer and two shallow east to west aligned pit features were recorded in 1999, during a watching brief. A large assemblage of finds was recovered, including pottery dating from the first to fourth centuries, with a concentration in the mid to late second century. Samian, mortaria and unusual amphorae, along with tesserae, a possible chimney pot/lamp cover/ventilator, and vessel glass suggest a relatively high-status site, though function remains uncertain due to the limited nature of the recorded remains. {1}{2}
A series of mortar, clay and metalled surfaces of Roman date were uncovered during trial excavation in early 1997. {3}
