Full Description

Former school and possible schoolmaster's house. One and two storey polychromatic brick building, faced on the street-facing elevation in yellow brick in an unusual bond consisting of three courses of stretchers with one course of alternating headers and stretchers, under a pitched gabled and hipped slate roof. Dentil course below the eaves. The two storey range appears to have either been a house for the schoolmaster or a separate dwelling, though it is bonded with the single storey range, suggesting the former is more likely. It has two large lateral stacks. The single storey range, likely a former schoolroom, has a gablet with a datestone in the shape of a scroll, reading 'ERECTED A.D. 1866'. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school was initially built as a British School in 1866, at a cost of £800, paid for by the lord of the manor. In 1872 it was attended by around 130 pupils. {2} The buildings can be seen on both the 1889 and 1905 OS maps of North Kyme and in both cases the building's plan form appears the same as its current form. A number of outbuildings to the north, possibly associated with the school, were demolished at some point in the 20th century and the site is now occupied by a car park. {3}{4} The school was closed in 2005, and the buildings are now in use as commercial offices. {5}
