Full Description

A small linear ditch was recorded in July 1992, during trial trenching at St Mary's School, Pottergate. The ditch was aligned roughly north to south and contained small quantites of Roman pottery and tile. {1}{2} Evidence for likely Roman occupation on this site was recorded in December 1997, during a trial trench evaluation. A number of pits, including one clay-lined example, and a north to south alignment of stone was recorded, suggesting the presence of buildings or structures on the site, dating to the Roman period. Pottery of 2nd-3rd century date, inclulding some samian ware, was recovered, along with fragments of animal bone, oyster shell, a bone pin and a small Roman copper alloy coin. {3}{4} Fifty seven sherds of Roman pottery and tile were found during a watching brief at St Mary's School, although these were thought to be residual. {5}{6}
