Full Description

An evaluation was conducted at the former Johnson's Seed Site, Boston. Environmental evidence indicates that the site perhaps changed from marshland to common land at some point during the medieval period. This is certainly supported by a series of features and finds recorded during trial trenching. Although evidence suggests that this area was still susceptible to periodic flooding. Pits and channels/ditches were identified here and these may relate to the construction of a bank close to the river and drainage of the land. Other recorded ditches may have served as land boundaries. Pottery recovered is all of a late medieval date except for two 11th-12th century sherds which are thought to have originated from manuring scatters or even earlier deposits that have been disturbed. Hammerscale indicates smithing was taking place in the vicinity and again further supports habitation at this time. {1}{2} A single redeposited 13th-15th century sherd was found during a watching brief to the rear of 10, 12 and 13 London Road, Boston. {3}{4}
