Full Description

62429 The settlement of Morton is first menitoned in the Book of Fees (1242-43), and means 'the farmstead, village in marshy land' from Old English. {1} Medieval ridge and furrow earthworks are visible on aerial photographs north east of Morton Manor. {2} The population in 1801 was 5, and 7 in 1901, and peaked in 1811 at 13. {3} Morton was usually returned with Swinderby, but has been a parish in its own right. {4} The ridge and furrow at SK 8846 6408 & SK 8853 6392 has been ploughed recently {6}
