Roman Artefact scatter at Chimney Cottage, Moor Lane

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

PRN 44475 The assemblage appears to represent three cooking pots. These wheel thrown pots along with other pottery fragments represent the earliest occupation of the site, dating to the mid to late 1st century AD. The outsides and insides of the pots contain evidence of sooting. The fabric and style of these pots also show typical roman characteristics whilst retaining some 'native' elements. This would suggest that there was an occupation site of local natives whom after the conquest of AD43 took on some of the new Roman practices. {1} A single greyware sherd was found during a watching brief. {2}{3}
