Full Description
62388
A Methodist Chapel is located in Chapel Hill. {1}
The extant chapel, which is on the site indicated as a chapel on the 1905 OS County Series Map, was visited in 2009. It is now in use as a house. No documentary evidence was found in connection with this building. A Wesleyan chapel was built in Chapel Hill in 1817 and another chapel, probably a replacement for an earlier chapel, was built in 1846 (PRN 65652). The extant former chapel appears to date from the late 19th or early 20th century. It is built of red brick with a gabled roof, which has a slate covering, with terracotta ridge tiles and finial, and has an attached annexe which was probably a school room. The gable facing the street has a 3 light square-headed window with a moulded hoodmould which retains the original leaded stained glass with ogee designs and a small rectangular opening above. Overhanging decorative eaves boards rest on brackets. The side elevations and the school room have segmental-headed windows replaced in plastic. There is a lean-to annexe with a chimney attached to the rear of the chapel and school room. The site originally lay in a detached portion of Swineshead parish.{2}{3}{4}
