Full Description

62396 The placename and/or the settlement of Dogdyke dates from the thirteenth century, from the Old English for 'the dyke where docks grow'. {1}{2} In 1565 there were 53 families living in Dogdyke. It was formerly situated on the east bank of the Witham in Coningsby parish, where it grew up around the terminus of a ferry. {3}{4} Dogdyke is a township of scattered houses, previously within Billinghay parish, extending southward on the west bank of the Witham from the bridge on the Sleaford Road to Dogdyke Station and Ferry, near the confluence of the Bain and the Witham. {5} Part of the endowment to the chapel at Dogdyke was a 'mansional house there with appurtenances, one barn, 2 enclosures containing 20 acres of fenne grounde, 2 little enclosures called the Osier Garthes'. {3}
