Full Description

Limestone fragments, possibly derived from levelling stone built medieval buildings were recorded during trial trenching. Pottery ranging in date from 7th century through to the post-medieval period was recovered together with medieval brick and a large assemblage of tile, 252 fragments in all. {1}{2} A previous borehole survey at the site of the former St Cuthbert's nursery site identified three distinct terraces. Archaeological deposits varied in thickness from c.3m to c.6m at a depth of c.2m under non archaeological overburden. The results suggested that Roman and medieval deposits and remains probably survived within much of the site. {3}{4}
