Full Description

Tower mill, thought to have been built c.1800. The mill is largely known as Mowbray's Mill, though is sometimes also known as Almonds Mill, after the Almonds garage which occupied the space in front of the mill in the early 20th century. Built of brick to a stouter design than usual, the mill originally stood four storeys high, and featured a reefing stage and an ogee cap. There were four patent sails, one pair of which were single sails whilst the other pair were double-sided, all of which drove three pairs of stones. There was also a two-pair hurst frame on the ground floor which could be driven by wind or steam. The mill worked until 1931, after which the machinery, cap and sails were removed, and the top storey was dismantled, with a crenellated top being built instead. The tower now stands largely empty and disused. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
