Full Description

One of the oldest tower mills in the area, this was standing by 1790 and worked until about 1930, being dismantled in 1933. The cap and wind shaft were still in place in 1950 but later in the 1950's it was partly demolished. There were four patent sails driving three pairs of stones, two grey and one French. The two storeyed stump stands beside the mill house. {1}{2} The mill was the subject of a building survey, conducted in 2013. The mill is circular in plan, with an external diameter of 7.3m and internal diameter of 5.9m. The building has no roof and survives to a height of 5.6m. It is built of handmade bricks, in English Bond style, with a pale grey sandy mortar. A single doorway at ground level allows access on the south-east side of the building. Three square window openings are at ground level, with four further openings at first floor level. Other, smaller, square holes are located around the first floor window to the south-west, and may be either putlog holes, used to support external scaffolding, or perhaps were used to support an external balcony to access the sails. No internal floors or mechanisms survive, though internal detailing can be determined in the use of first floor joist holes, bullnose bricks and traces of internal whitewashing. It has been known, at various times, as Station Windmill, Wallace’s Mill and Cliff’s Mill. {3}{4}
