44456 Built to replace a post mill c.1830, this tall tower mill worked by wind until 1944. The four patent sails drove three pairs of stones on the third floor, originally two French and one grey, but latterly two grey and one French. The French stones were taken out c.1920 and replaced with a kibbler as no flour had been made since the Great War. The sails were removed in 1949 and the cap followed suit in1968. Milling continued by Blackstone oil engine power using the stones, with a new diesel engine being installed in 1960, itself being replaced in 1962 following problems. It went out of use shortly afterwards however as electric motors took over any grinding or cleaning work with modern machinery still in use today. The tarred tower stands derelict, has lost its stage and has a very pronounced lean. The lower part of the upright shaft remains with the great spur wheel and all the gearing and fittings to the two pairs of grey stones, with the kibbler, engine and drive shafts. There is a suggestion that the tower might be reduced to a stump due to concern over its stability. If this happens the machinery will be removed and taken into safe storage for future use or display elsewhere.
