Full Description

PRN 62356 The Baptist Chapel on the north side of Church Street was built in 1847. It is red brick, with a hipped slate roof, and has a single storey wing on the street front. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3} The site was visited in 2009. The chapel is still in use as a Baptist place of worship. Documentary sources suggest that it was built in 1846 and 1847. The hipped roof has overhanging eaves. The four bays of the broad front are defined by brick pilaster strips. The first and third bays have gabled brick porches with single round-headed glazing bar windows and flat-headed doorways. Between the porches is a tall round-headed glazing- bar sash window with ashlar keystone and imposts and a pair of similar windows are found on the rear elevation. There are three segmental-headed glazing-bar sashes in the upper tier of the front. A modern brick annexe and porch have been added over the third and fourth bays. The wing on the street front has a hipped slated roof and two segmental-headed glazing bar sashes with panelled shutters in brick recesses and a tall lateral brick stack. The front elevation of three bays has a central door, with a margin light overlight, flanked by single glazing bar sashes and a pair of Gothic arched bootscrapers.{4}{5}{6}
