Full Description

A medieval chapel is believed to have stood in the centre of Walcott village, about 200 yards west of the Methodist chapel, between School Lane and Dene Lane. The chapel is reported in the 18th century as having a nave, chancel, bell-cote, a carved oak chancel screen and oak seats. It became disused after the death of the last incumbant Rev. John Lancaster in 1784, and was pulled down in about 1790. The chapel's font survived the initial demolition and was left on the site, at the corner of the schoolyard. It was destroyed by passing traffic in the early years of the 20th century. A new church was built to replace the chapel in 1852 (see MLI62322). Confusion with historical records in the mid 19th century has mixed up details about this chapel with another medieval chapel located at the Walcot near Alkborough in North Lincolnshire (that chapel had been dedicated to St Oswald, and had been given to Spalding Abbey by King John). Late 12th century documentation regarding this chapel states that it was given to the nearby Catley Priory (see MLI60709) as an endowment 'unburdened because it is annexed to the church of Billinghay'. Surviving late medieval wills suggest that this chapel at Walcott near Billinghay had been dedicated to St Margaret. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
