Full Description

62314 A Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is recorded in Timberland in 1856, and appears to survive to the present. {1}{2} The site was visited in 2009. The chapel on this site was built in 1878. The earlier chapel, built in 1822, survives on a different site in Timberland (see PRN 65614). The chapel is of red brick with polychrome brick dressings and has a gabled roof with a covering of modern tiles. The front gable has 3 bays of round-headed openings in arches of blue bricks with a string-course at impost level of blue bricks with yellow brick cross motifs. The round-headed windows have Venetian tracery and the doorway and a date tablet are situated in a tall round-headed recess. The double doors have decorative iron hinges and a radiating fan-light above. The front gable is raised with stone copings, moulded kneelers, pinnacles and stone cross on gable apex. A circular opening in the gable with geometric tracery is outlined by a circle of blue bricks. The gable verge is of gault brick with rows of small brackets and nail-head decoration. The side elevations have three bays of round-headed windows, separated by pilasters, with leaded glass and radiating glazing bars in the arch. The chapel has a brick plinth. The gabled school room to the rear has flat-headed windows which have been replaced in plastic and a doorway. Original decorative iron railings survive and there are several foundation stones.{3}{4}{5}
