Full Description

This was one of three methodist chapels in Martin, and was a Primitive Methodist chapel. A tablet above the blocked central doorway gives its date of 1837. Originally of a single storey, it had a broad front of three bays facing the lane. The building was heightened in the mid 19th century, and was converted into a house after a new Primitive Methodist chapel was built on High Street in 1879 (see PRN 62285). {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The site was visited in 2009. The Primitive Methodists arethought to have had a presence in Martin from 1829. This building may have been a cart shed originally before becoming a chapel in 1837 (personal communication). The two segmental-headed windows flanking the original blocked doorway were originally taller or higher. When the chapel was heightened, it was given a pedimented raised gable with stone copings and kneelers and a new stone tablet inscribed 'Primitive Chapel 1858'. There were two round-arched windows at the upper level of the opposing elevation. It has a half-hipped roof with a pantile covering. The eaves course has dogtooth brickwork. {7}{8}{9}
