Full Description

A windmill is depicted in this location on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The mill is labelled as a corn mill on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The exact date of construction of the mill is unknown, although sometime in the early 19th century might be probable. Later historic mapping shows the mill to have been demolished by the mid 20th century. {1}{2} White's Directory of 1856 lists two millers working in Martin at that time, as Joseph Farbon and Thomas Hollinshead, although is unclear about which miller worked at which of the two known mills (see MLI82828 for the former mill located off Mill Lane). {3} A letter written by Percy Hollinshead in 1949 makes clear that this was the mill worked by the Farbon family. Percy describes the Farbon mill as a lower tower mill without a staging platform (unlike the Hollinshead mill, which had an external staging platform), and that it was dismantled at some time in the early 20th century. {4}
