Full Description

A windmill, labelled as a corn mill, is depicted in this location on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The exact date of construction of the mill is unknown, although sometime in the early 19th century might be probable. Later historic mapping shows the mill to have been demolished by the mid 20th century. {1} The mill was recorded in photographs of c.1900 and c.1920, where it is shown as a four-sailed tower mill, with a staging platform around the outside, at about the 3rd floor. The photographs also show a large chimney stack in one of the attached subsidiary buildings, suggesting the mill may have also been powered by steam by that point. The mill is also shown in a pen and ink sketch, drawn by Karl Wood in 1932. The mill is shown with the sails and cap removed, and it is possible that the building is no longer in use. The chimney and attached subsidiary building are still present, however, so some working by steam may still have been occuring. {2} White's Directory of 1856 lists two millers working in Martin at that time, as Joseph Farbon and Thomas Hollinshead, although is unclear about which miller worked at which of the two known mills (see MLI82829 for the former mill located off the High Street). {3} A letter written by Percy Hollinshead in 1949 makes clear that this was the mill worked by the Hollinshead family. Percy describes the Farbon mill as a lower tower mill without a staging platform, and that it was dismantled in the early 20th century. Hollinshead mill was built in about 1855, and worked until about 1916, after which it became derelict. Some details of the operation and equipment inside the mill is given in the letter. {4}
