Full Description
This chapel is one of three in Martin. It was a Primitive Methodist Chapel built in 1878-79 to supercede the former Primitive Methodist Chapel on Mill Lane (see PRN 62294). It has a brick gabled front with a clock tower on the facade. It appeared to be used in 2004 as a workshop. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
The site was visited in 2009. The chapel closed in 1988 and has been used as a workshop and business premises since that time. From 1936 the Primitive congregation was joined by the congregation from the Wesleyan Chapel across the road which closed. It has a pedimented gable with stone copings and kneelers and a three-bay yellow gault brick front with prominent red brick dressings. The projecting central bay includes a round-headed doorway and, above, forms a square clock tower with a pair of small round-headed windows. The round-arched openings have keystones and the bays and openings are bordered by red brick. The pedimented gable has a recess of red brick and a stepped pattern in the gable. The gable verges and pediment inset are embellished with nailhead ornament. The red brick side elevations have four bays of round-headed windows with gault brick arches and dentil eaves cornices. A stone tablet on brackets is set above the door '1879 Methodist'. Original iron railings survive. {7}{8}
