Full Description

St Nicholas' Church externally is all in the Decorated style, but internally the earliest parts are Norman, with various Norman pieces reset in the porch, Norman capitals reused as bases in the north arcade, and the chancel arch being late Norman. The three-bay north arcade is otherwise Early English in style, while the chancel, south aisle and west tower are Decorated, the tower having an unusual broach spire with tall broaches. The clerestorey is Perpendicular in style. There is a piscina in the south aisle, and the tub font has been badly recut, probably in the 18th century. Restoration took place in 1907.{1} St Nicholas' Church is built of limestone ashlar with some coursed limestone rubble, and has lead roofs. The foundations were renewed in 1889, and the church restored in 1907 and 1926. The west tower is of two stages, and both north and south aisles are of three bays. An earlier nave roof pitch can be seen above the tower arch. The nave and aisles have braced tie beam roofs. A 13th and a 14th century piscina can be found in the south aisle, as can a blocked squint. The north aisle has an aumbry and a squint, and the arch from aisle to chancel has a piscina in its eastern side. Another piscina can be found in the sill of the south window of the chancel.
