Full Description

62079 In 1975 surface finds were recovered from the field to the south of Catton's Holt. This included second to fourth century pottery, including Samian, grey ware, Nene Valley ware, and local coarse ware (from Swanpool?), together with tile, building debris, and oyster shells. {1}{2} In 1997 further Roman material was recovered, which included coins, building debris (farmworkers report that two lorry loads of stone had been removed from this field in 1995-1997), a head stud brooch, grey ware, colour-coated ware and hypocaust tile. {3} The field to the west of Brickyard Farm has been metal detected. Roman artefacts recovered include steelyard weights, flue tile, tegulae, grey ware, Samian, rim of large black pot, nails, ring, cruciform brooch, oyster shells, colour-coated ware, a bronze statue of Mercury or Mars, bronze coins, cloak pin, cockerel brooch with enamelling, 'knee' brooch, 'umernate' brooch, buckles and pins. {4}
