Full Description

PRN 62201 During trial trenching a north-south ditch, thought to be a track way was recorded. It is aligned with Mareham Lane and is also thought to be associated with the small Roman town at Old Sleaford. A curvilinear gully originally identified on the geophysical survey was recorded, the shape of the gully suggests that it might be some form of enclosure ditch. Much of the pottery and animal bone recovered is out of context, suggesting a reworking of the site C.850-1150. Two coins were also recovered unstratified from the topsoil. {1}{2} Further excavtion on the site revealed a series of post-holes on an north-south alignment. Ditches were also recorded, possibly forming part of a field system. From the ditch 2nd to 3rd century pottery was recovered together with animal remains, and a fragment of a saddle quern. {3}{4}
