Full Description

62027 A Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in Tanvats in 1887. It appears to survive into the 1970s. {1}{2}{3} The site was visited in 2009. The site is now occupied by a recently built bungalow. The first chapel was built in 1835 and replaced by a new chapel in 1887 which closed in 1969 when the congregation dwindled. It was subsequently demolished, reportedly in the 1990s (personal communication). A photograph of the chapel in the early 1960s survives. It shows that it was a gabled building with a slate roof covering, constructed of red brick with yellow brick dressings, in Gothic style with pointed windows, and aisles. The raised gable was surmounted by a bellcote. A Sunday School is also shown on the 1905 OS County Series map and appears to survive in the photograph, though at the time of the photograph, in the early 1960s, the gabled slate roof appears to be in a poor state of repair.{4}{5}{6}
