Full Description

1997. A small enclosure consisting of external and internal enclosure ditches, pits and a well, were recorded during a watching brief. A fairly large amount of animal bone was recovered from this site including a very young calf skeleton found in a pit, this is suggestive that the emphasis in this enclosure was on stock farming. Some very basic Roman brick and tile was recovered indicating perhaps the presence of at least one substantial building, perhaps with a tiled roof. A single piece of box flue tile was recovered suggesting the presence of a heated building in the vicinity but probably not on site. Approximately one hundred sherds of pottery were recovered dating from mid 3rd century onwards, at least some of this pottery originated from Lincoln kilns at Swanpool, this is an indicator that this small enclosure was possibly linked to a nearby rural settlement.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
