Full Description

61998 A Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in Metheringham in 1840. The site of the chapel is not clear. {1}{2} The site was visited in 2009. The former chapel probably survives as the building which is now Parker's Stores. It is a square building, constructed of coursed stone, with a hipped, slated, roof and two tiers of three bays of sash glazing bar windows on each elevation. The lower tier of the front elevation has been altered but includes the remains of a broad central doorway in classical style with chamfered ashlar jambs with classical moulded imposts and dentil ornament. The chapel was built in 1840 with a large day school aided by government grants. It replaced earlier chapels of 1803 and 1824, though it is unclear if these were on the same site. The school may also survive in the gabled brick building attached behind which has blocked segmental-headed windows. It was superseded by the chapel of 1908 further along High Street PRN 61985.{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
