Full Description

61970 A brick tower mill survives about half a mile west of the church on the north side of Prince's Street. It is dated 1867, and is six storeys, built of red brick with white brick bands, and is circular in plan. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} It seems to have not enjoyed much prosperity later on because as each sail was lost, it was not replaced, the other ones being juggled round to maintain the balance. It ran therefore with the intriguing sequence of 6, then 4, then 2 and finally 3 sials, in which form it finished work in the 1920s or early 1930s. It stood until 1942 with 3 sails and due to its bizarre (and possibly unique) appearance was the frequent subject of visits by enthusiasts during the 1920s and 1930s and is one of the most photographed mills in the county. As late as 1961 the cap frame and windshaft were still in place, but these have now gone. It was thought in 1977 that the machinery was still present, although it was not possible to verify this at the time. The banding in the brickwork is unusual. The iron reefing stage remained in bad condition at second floor level, having been swiped by various sails at intervals as they crashed to the ground. As previously stated 6 patent sails were carried. The brakewheel and all the gearing was of iron and four pairs of stones were driven. The mill was derelict by 1977. {3} The mill was still derelict in 2022. {4}
