Full Description

PRN 70237 Trial trenching revealed the limestone walls of a building fronting Hungate. The use of the building is unclear but evidence shows that it was modified and later internal walls were of low quality compared to earlier partitions, suggesting that the status of the building declined. About twenty sherds of 15th -18th century pottery was recovered together with seventy-six fragments of bone.{1}{2} Further trial trenching on this site recovered ten sherds of post medieval pottery.{3}{4} A watching brief was undertaken during the demolition of a retaining wall at the former St Martin's School, Hungate, Lincoln. Construction of a retaining wall at Motherby Lane car park. Remains of a wall, dated to the 15th to 16th century from tile fragments was uncovered. There appeared to be a floor which was respecting this wall. {5} {6}
