Full Description

PRN 70236 Trial trenching revealed identifiable structures dated to the 12th-15th centuries, a possible stone pad was partially revealed and two east-west aligned walls were recorded. These features are believed to be related but it is unclear if this is a building or part of terracing or a boundary. Finds recovered include approximately forty sherds of pottery and fifty animal bone fragments.{1}{2} Further trial trenching on this site revealed a cobbled surface that appears to be related to the above structures. Thirteen sherds of pottery were recovered.{3}{4} Further trial trenching in area B revealed more medieval deposits, there is a large density of pits which are likely to be associated with the buildings fronting onto Hungate. Although no buildings were recorded an oven made up of several rows of tightly packed tiles set on edge was discovered, this is a good indicator that buildings are likely to be in close proximity. Thirty-eight sherds of pottery was recovered from this site in all, all of medieval date.{5}{6} A watching brief was undertaken during the demolition of a retaining wall at the former St Martin's School, Hungate, Lincoln. Construction of a retaining wall at Motherby Lane car park. A robbed out wall which is dated by tile fragments to the 14th to 16th century. There was also a single sherd of 14th century Lincoln glazed ware. {7}{8}
