Full Description

PRN 35528 During trial trenching and a subsequent archaeological excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe Gas Pipeline, an early medieval sunken building (grubenhaus) was identified. The pit appeared to cut the ditch of an earlier Bronze Age barrow (PRN 35527). Finds recovered include pottery (including Maxey ware) dating to the 7th century. A finely decorated bone comb was also found. The grubenhaus may be an isolated building or part of a large settlement. Similar anomalies were noted either side of the easement during geophyiscal survey and suggest much more extensive remains.{1}{2}
